I’m going to tell you something that can potentially set you free for the rest of your life.
HEALTH IS NOT AN OBLIGATION.
I know. With the world the way it is; “fitspo” accounts, crossfit gyms, and Dr. Oz like TV shows everywhere you turn, you would think physical health is something we are required to care about.
And if we don’t? We’re lazy. Disgusting. Not worthy of respect. A failure.
Well I’m here to tell you – YOU DON’T HAVE TO CARE ABOUT “HEALTH” IF YOU DON’T WANT TO.
As human beings, our greatest gift is the ability to choose. It’s one of our superpowers. YOU get to choose what is important to you.
If health just isn’t one of them, that is perfectly fine. You’re not a shitty person for putting other things first. Everyone has different values. Maybe you just need to take a break from a “healthy” lifestyle so you can clear your head and re-prioritize your life, that's fine too.
There are many benefits to living a more active lifestyle and eating real foods, we all know that. But what if for once in your life you don’t want to think about how many calories your meal has or feel guilty for not sticking to your 90 minute torturous gym routine 5 days/week? What if you want to indulge in a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks or eat dinner after 8 PM? What if you want to participate in pizza day at work instead of eating that grilled chicken breast and salad you brought for lunch?
I am NOT saying that caring about your physical health is a bad thing. But you have to protect your mental health too.
…If caring for your physical health is draining your joy and happiness,
…If it’s causing you anxiety and turning you into a control freak,
…If you’re missing out on time with loved ones or friends to stick to your physical health goals,
Then maybe you should re-evaluate your why AND your approach.
Either way - you get to choose how you want to live your life. If you don’t want to care about being healthy, then you don’t have to. If you do choose to care, don’t think you’re on some pedestal. You’re not any better of a human. Eating a salad everyday doesn’t mean you’re not a liar, unfaithful, judgmental, or extremely rude person. Sorry if that was harsh, but we’re about realness around here right?!
Before you go on with your day, ask yourself these questions: WHY DO I FEEL I NEED TO BE “HEALTHY”? WHAT DOES HEALTH ACTUALLY MEAN TO ME? WHERE DO THESE FEELINGS OF OBLIGATION COME FROM?
If this is the permission you needed to let go of the soul sucking life of dieting and “health” – here it is!
Congratulations, you are set free.
